Lake of the Woods is a unique body of water that is fed by the Rainy River and lesser lakes, rivers, streams and creeks all flowing West and North with outflows to the northend of the lake. People that enjoy all Lake of the Woods has to offer, often wait or watch in wonder as the seasons changes to having open water to ice. The local residents in Morson use a general rule that once there is ice across the Rainy River, the ice will form on Lake of the Woods in one to two weeks.  When the conditions are right, wind pushes water across small islands, trees, and rocks that create interesting icicles and ice formations. This wind, helps move the cooler water to the surface so that ice will form on the lake.
